Is Speaking in Tongues the Evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit? Part 2 of 2

Preview: Part two of a two-part lesson concerning what the Bible says about speaking in tongues. 


Scripture Reading: Acts 2:1-18. 

Memory Verse: Acts 2:18. 

1. What promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost? Acts 2:16-18 & Joel 2:28-32. 
2. In what way did they prophesy after this promise was fulfilled? Were they under the sacred influence of the Holy Spirit? Acts 2:7-8. 
Note: “Prophesy” means: to utter with divine inspiration, to predict; or foretell; as to inevitable change. 
3. How did the people of other nationalities bear record of how they prophesied? Acts 2:9-11. 
Note: Many nationalities were at Jerusalem at this special season of the year, called Pentecost. This was the day when the Holy Spirit was given, and the disciples began to speak in different languages of the known civilized world. The tongues in which they spoke were not UNKNOWN but were well known according to the testimony they bore of this event. The word “UNKNOWN” is a mistranslated word, which is found only in the Authorized version. Let us notice the word, it is written in Italics, showing that it was only added by the translators in the year 1611. 
4. Is speaking in a tongue the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit as some claim, or is it one of the gifts of the Spirit? I Corinthians 12:7-11. 
5. Explain the usefulness of speaking in tongues when no one can understand you. I Corinthians 14:19-22. 
6. What other gift of the Spirit did the Apostle Paul say would be more helpful to the Church? I Corinthians 14:5. 
7. In what way does Paul describe the distribution of the various gifts in the Church? I Corinthians 12:27-28. 
8. Do all the different members of the Church have the same gift, and should all speak in tongues? I Corinthians 12:8-11. 
Note: The gift of the Holy Spirit is the Spirit given. The gifts and fruits of the Spirit are the products of the GIFT. This is very plain Bible teaching. Then why should some religionists put so much stress upon speaking in tongues? We are all given our own gifts so we may work together as the Body of Christ to more effectively spread the message.
9. What is the fruit and evidence of the Holy Spirit? Galatians 5:22-23. 
10. In what way did Jesus say that His followers would be known, by their fruits or by speaking in tongues? Matthew 7:16-20 & John 15:5. 
11. When Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, did he speak in an unknown tongue or in his own language? Luke 1:56-75. 
Note: We are not against speaking in tongues, but it must be according to Bible standard. Paul speaking under high inspiration said, “Forbid not to speak in tongues.” But according to the modern tongue movement, which may be considered to be the deception of Satan; it is a pitiful sight to behold these people foaming and twisting themselves like demons. Jesus’ promise was to send the “Comforter” and not a tormentor. The Holy Spirit keeps men from transgressing His Law, and it also tells them to keep the Sabbath Holy. Let us beware of false prophets. 
12. What are the rules in a Church when these gifts are manifested? I Corinthians 14:27. 
13. What other essential gift is closely associated with speaking in tongues? I Corinthians 14:28. 
14. Is interpretation one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Discuss the importance of interpretation in conjunction with the gift of tongues. I Corinthians 12:10.
